Biography
The Tom Fun Orchestra is a rock n' roll nod to Vaudeville featuring an eclectic mix of electric and acoustic instruments more reminiscent of a Gypsy encampment than a bar band.
Lead by Tom's unique and undeniable song writing talents, the sound, the songs and the experience are among the most refreshing the Maritimes has to offer. With an unusual mix of members from Cape Breton's finest bands including Slowcoaster, Rock Ranger, The Squatters, I Was A Spy and Yellow. The Orchestra has brought together the edgy energy of indie rock with an eclectic instrumentation and soulful, intelligent and enjoyable songwriting.
The band's unique mix of electric and acoustic instruments marries a would-be bluegrass orchestra of violin, mandolin, banjo, accordion, upright bass and clarinet to a driving trio of guitars and pounding drums. Built on a foundation of exemplary musicianship, the ample rhythm section allows Morgan Currie and Zach MacLean the freedom to provide breathtaking leads on violin and guitar that soar over cutting mandolin melodies, delicate clarinet and a wall of accordion and bowed upright bass.
The gang is led upfront by the vocal duo of Ian MacDougall and Alicia Penney as lead, often being joined by as many all eight other members for group count-ins or shout-along choruses. As a front man, Ian is as entertaining and engaging as the best in the business with an extremely animated presence and remarkable ability to think on his feet. Alicia makes the perfect foil for his antics as the reticent girl-next-door with a voice that commands the room’s attention.
The band has spent the last year rocking stages with the likes of Slowcoaster and Carmen Townsend at clubs and festivals all over the maritimes. They were a buzz band at the recent ECMA weekend, impressing fans, musicians, and industry professionals alike with their engaging song-craft, jaw-dropping musicianship and an endearing and invigorating stage show.
