NFaly Kouyate and Dunyakan

(from Afro Celts)

N'faly's new cd with Dunyakan, Tunya, will be released shortly and has already been garnering critical praise and international airplay and interview attention. It is an exciting and groundbreaking departure from much traditional African-based releases, with the collaboration of several classically trained artists, in addition to N'faly's tremendous kora playing and the more traditional sounds of the band as well, truly Mandingue music for the new millennium, authentically fusing ancient with modern.

2007 finds N'faly performing at both WOMAD Caceres and the 25th anniversary celebration WOMAD Charlton Park, at their new location. In addition, their first South African dates, at Awesome Africa Festival and Bushfire Festival, and then Galdames Folk Festival, in Bilbao, Spain.

N'faly has previously performed at such prestigious international festivals and venues as Couleur Café (Belgium), WOMAD Reading, WOMADrid, Francofolies at Spa, Pardinas (Spain), Nuits D'Afrique (Montréal), Sori-WOMAD (S. Korea), Bucarest Francophone, Rainbowpark (Holland), Afrolatino (Belgium), Tartan Heart, Big Big World (both Scotland), Open Sky, Voix du Monde, International Pavilion at Llangollen, Blackheath Halls, Cambridge Junction, Trades Club, among many others. In Belgium he has also worked with the Yehudi Menuhim Foundation and may work with them in future as well.

With the Afrocelts, he has literally traversed the world, in additon to being nominated for two best World Music Grammy Awards, and a gold record in Ireland.

This year alone, he has travelled to S. Korea with them, as well as Global Fusion Festival, Beautiful Days, and Wychwood Festival, all UK, and Deerlycke (Belgium).

Biography~~N'faly Kouyaté

N’Faly Kouyaté was born into one of the the most famous families of griotsfrom the heart of the Mandingue in West Africa, an area which includes Guinea-Conakry, Mali, the Gambia, Senegal, and Burkina Faso. As one of the most charismatic performers of his generation, N’Faly is ideally placed to carry on the legacy of his father and also to help promote knowledge, enjoyment, and respect for his culture.

He is the son of Konkoba Kabinet Kouyaté of Siguiri, in the Republic of Guinea. Through his performances, he uses music and storytelling as a way to open doors between different peoples and cultures, striving always to tell about his culture while embracing others, with a profound sense of inclusion rather than exclusion, of unity between cultures and finally, our shared humanity.

He is a tireless advocate of his culture, yet his love of collaboration and discovering new worlds leaves him open to all experiences. Comfortable in many worlds, he lives by his father’s early counsel to respect and embrace new ideas; this viewpoint is deeply embodied in both his recorded and live work. To this end, he has a nonprofit, Namunkanda (The Defense of Culture).

He also pursues his career and goals through his work with his own ensemble Dunyakan ("The Voice of the World") in which blues, world music, jazz and the traditional music of Guinea are intermingled.

Recent Biography of N'faly Kouyaté:

N'faly's solo career has kicked into high gear since the end of 2003. He has toured Wales with Dunyakan, performing at the Royal International Pavilion at Llangollen among other venues. This experience energized Dunyakan and prepared them for marketing their CD, "Kora Grooves from West Africa," ARC Music, which was released in October 2004. In summer of 2004 N'faly and Dunyakan performed at the Festival Nuits D'Afrique in Montreal, Quebec, one of the most respected African festivals. They opened the festival and performed at Club Balattou with great gusto.

With the release of the CD, a floodgate of sorts was opened, as the combination of international distribution, great review attention, and airplay of the music increased N'faly's international visibility greatly, setting him as an important international artist aside from his respected work with the Afrocelts. His passion to continue to build and develop his group and his own music is a continual process, and throughout 2004, Dunyakan continued to perform, at such respected festivals as WOMAD Reading (UK). In addition, one of his dreams, the founding of a music school, Cadence Mandingue, was realized.http://www.cadence-mandingue.be/

2005 brought many excitements, as N'faly and Dunyakan continue to perform throughout Belgium, N'faly's current home (he lives in Brussels), and throughout Europe and the UK. In late May, summer season started with a small UK tour, ending at Bray Jazz Festival, and with stops at such clubs at Hebden Bridge's Trades Club, and the Junction, in Cambridge. They also performed at WOMADrid, WOMAD's first festival in Madrid, at Couleur Cafe, Francofolies at Spa, and, with the Afrocelts, N'faly performed at Eu'ritmix, at Grand Place in Brussels. His song "Sene," or "Working the Land," was for many the high point of the Afrocelt release, Anatomic. N'faly performed at the Nuits Nomad, at Besançon, France. N'faly performed solo at Tartan Heart Festival in Inverness, Scotland, where he literally stopped traffic.

N'faly has collaborated with the Belgian group Urban Trad and he is featured on their new single, Diama Dén.

In 2006, N’faly’s new CD, Tunya, which has many exciting and surprising new ideas and perhaps even a guest or two, is completed, slated for 2007 release. He performed in September at Sori-WOMAD (S. Korea), throughout Europe at festivals such as Pardinas (Spain), Open Sky (Switzerland)... even home in Belgium at Afrolatino, Feest in’t Park, at Flagey with Kora Trio and Djansa Festival. On 29 April, he performed with the Afro Celt Sound System and Urban Trad, at Oxfam’s Melange Continental, their 35th year anniversary celebration. There were two trips to Malta, one to perform for the President. In September, Dunyakan performed at the Bucarest Francophone , and N’faly was also invited to guest with Urban Trad at Belgium’s anti-racism concerts on 1 October.

2007 sees N’faly performing at two WOMAD festivals, WOMAD Caceres in Spain, and at the 25th anniversary of WOMAD at their new location in Charlton Park, UK. Also there are visits to South Africa, and Bilbao, Spain at the Galdames Folk Festival, among many other exciting concerts and events.

Already 2008 promises to contain many exciting ventures, from Toronto in late May to a tour of UK in the early summer months, among other possibilities under discussion.

CORE MEMBERS

OF

DUNYAKAN:

Muriel Finet Kouyaté

Muriel was born at Ornans, France, where she began her classical training in the study of music, in piano, at the age of eight years. At twelve years old, and for the next four years, she performed in a formation led by her professor of piano: "The Instrumental Club" (violincello, harp, piano drum batterie and vocals)...which was produced locally. It was at the first festival of Music in France, in 1982, that she performed in duo (Piano/Violincello) and won first prize in the competition for children which was organized for that occasion.

July 29, 2005riven by her passion for African percussions, she moved to Brussels where she studied under master percussionists such as Mamady Keita, N’Toman Keita, Famaoudou Konate...In 1999, she was awarded a degree to school Tam Tam Mandingue by Mamady Keita, as « being capable of exercising the statute of professor to TamTam Mandingue; her capacities, her rhythmic and historic knowledge reflect the confidence that she has attained ». Then, expanding her knowledge independently, she continued her growth through numerous voyages to West Africa. One of her passions is to transmit this musical culture. She has done this for ten years: from ‘96 to ‘98 in N’Toman Keita’s school "Africa’s Drums." From ‘98 to ‘04 in her school "Namunkanda.."

Since 2004 in their new school "Cadence Mandingue." (Site: www.cadence-mandingue.be)

Each year she organizes different stages and workshops in Belgium, France...and also accompanies classes in Afro Dance in Belgium and has collaborated for two years with Mousta Largo.

Notably, she has performed remarkably with the groups:

--- « N’toman Keita et Sakhodougou » (CD N’Dania)

---« Seny Touré et Wofa Wonbere » , numerous festival in Belgium (Dranouter...)

--- « Ballet Kassogna » of Mama Adama Camara.

Currently, she is a musician in the group Dunyakan (djembe, duns, small percussions and vocals).

She is also working as a percussionist with the ensemble "Folilaka" (artistic director, Mamady Keita), a group composed exclusively of women!

Virginie Pierre

Africa, she knows. And for good reason. For the past ten years, she has participated in numerous stages and projects in Belgium, Holland, Paris, Africa and even in Cuba, for something a little different.

Are you connoisseurs? Then you must know these masters of dance:

KEN N’Diaye (Sénégal), Mama Adama Camara (Guinée), Issa Sow (Sénégal), Doudou N’Diaye Rose Jr (Sénégal), Georges Momboye (Côte d’Ivoire), Merlin (Cameroun), Elsa Wolliatson (Kenja), Koffi Koko (Bénin), Norma Claire (Guyannes), Grégorio « El Goyo » Hernandez Rios (Cuba), Le Ballet de Camaguey (Cuba) ; Alberto Gonzales (Cuba)... She performs as both singer and dancer with the group "BAO" for the past four years.

But this is only one facet of our artist. Because in reality, she is a comedienne. After leaving the Royal Conservatory at Liege, Virginie performed in many theatrical companies at Liege, Brussels, and Paris. She teaches through the "Arts de la Parole" and has done so for the past ten years, at the Academy Eghezee and at the Conservatory at Huy. She is adored by both children and adults alike and has motivated them greatly, surpassing her greatest wishes for them with the spectacle "Mariages" by the Communite Francais. This was chosen to represent Belgium at the festival "Vivre la Francophonie" at Quebec, Canada.

Didier Likeng

Petis Didier Likeng was born in Yaounde, Cameron, Didier has performed since the age of fifteen. He has performed with Toure Kunda, the Black and White Gospel Singers, Nothing But the Blues, Sans Papiers, Afra Sound Star, Franck Michael and Zaiko Langa Langa Familia Dey. Didier’s remarkable talent, energy and personality are irrepressible, and indispensable in creating the Dunyakan sound. Happily, his devotion to his own solo and collaborative work still leave time for his contributions to Dunyakan.

Gauthier Lisein

Gauthier Lisein is the newest member of Dunyakan, and, Already, he is an invaluable member of the Dunyakan family! Gauthier is an eclectic musician, proficient in drums, percussions, some clarinet and a singer as well. He also composes and arranges live music. He has a sensibility that works so well with Dunyakan, and the Mandingue rhythms of N’faly’s music. Born in Brussels, he started his musical career at age 15, studying at the prestigious Conservatoire de Liège, jazz section. Finishing these studies, he found himself discovering African music and rhythms. This has really changed the direction of his music and career. He has worked with Mamady Keita, N’toman Keita and Bruno "Rose" Genero, among many others. He is also passionately interested in the traditional and popular music of Cuba and has frequently travelled there. He has also travelled to Africa as well, always interested in the connections and evolutions of the music. Gauthier has performed with such groups and musicians as Zap Mama, Bao, Camaxe, Richard Galliano, and now is rapidly becoming a valued member of the Dunyakan family. His expertise, passion, and enthusiasm is evident in all he does. His myspace page, www.myspace.com/gorgol17, has much more information, too!

Mady Kouyaté

Mady, the newest member of Dunyakan, is one of the brightest young guitarists to emerge from Guinea. Now that he has settled in Belgium, Dunyakan are delighted to add Mady’s unique musical style and charming personality to the group’s mix. He has a profound knowledge of the Mandingue world, its culture and music, and his music truly comes from the heart and a deep sense of his cultural traditions. Mady has performed with some of the most prestigious organizations in Guinea before his move to Brussels, and is happily establishing himself now as a charter member of Dunyakan. His intricate style of guitar mastery is a counterpoint to the kora and other instruments in Dunyakan, and a very welcome addition to Dunyakan!

Gato Bedseyere

Gato is not only an extraordinarily talented percussionist, but a wonderful vocalist as well, his deep, rich tones evoking the history and culture of his homeland, Angola. In additon to his work with Dunyakan, Gato has his own CD out, Acordar, which is a wonerful introduction to the underheard music of Angola. His increasing reputation throughout Belgium and Europe are well deserved, and he is a welcome member of Dunyakan.

Selected press extracts:

"the effusive Kouyate was a marvel on kora, an African cousin to the Celtic harp..."

Gene Stout, Seattle Post-Intelligencer.

N’Faly...venerated griot...the master musicians...understand their tradition better than the academic; their knowledge is deep and profound...‘Release," starts with an ancestral invocation..."Amber’ features a heartrending vocal meditation from...N’Faly...a flowing kora solo..."

Underground(Toronto)"Cultural diversity is key element for up-and-coming performers."

"N’Faly Kouyate wore a smile which seemed to stretch from one end of the stage to the other..."

Kate Walsh, Celtic Connections.

"...the crowd was instantly transported to a different world. It was then that N’Faly Kouyate...carrying his 21 stringed kora with the largest smile in anticipation of creation that I’ve ever seen. N’Faly’s smile and demeanor, not to mention the kora, lit the crowd up..totally drawn in,locked into the moment with the band...locked into a sonic trance, as happy as elevated in spirit as any music has ever lifted me... the singularly best show I’ve ever seen."

Bill Thompson, review of ACSS concert, the Fillmore, August 2001.

"I was completely mesmerised by his energy and enthusiasm. The kora was like a second voice for him (when he laughed he played all these little ripply notes up and down the strings!). The concert showed a more funky side to him - versatility is obviously one of his strengths. Utterly inspiring."
Rachel, London

N'faly's CD--Kora Grooves from West Africa

Here are a few reviews:

Scott Stevens, Spin the Globe (KAOS, Olympia, Washington):

After the djembe, the kora is probably the best-known African instrument. Essential in traditional griot music, the 21-stringed calabash harp is today carving its own niche in electronic and dance music in the hands of...Afrocelts. N'Faly Kouyate is the Afrocelts' kora player and has collaborated with other musicians ranging from Wes Welenga to Jesse Cook and Robert Plant. On Kora Grooves, Kouyate hews a middle ground between tradition and the dancehall, in an ensemble that includes bass and drum kit, along with backing vocals and other African instruments. Kouyate who arranged all and wrote most of the music on the album, also displays his skill on balafon on "Wawa." With songs of varied pace and mood, Kora Grooves is a great chance to hear a musician whose light is too often hidden under the Afrocelts' bushel of electronics.

Bjorn-Erik Hanssen (Leopard Man website):

The driving force in Dunyakan is of course N'Faly Kouyate and his kora. N'Faly is a very skilled instrumentalist, and in long instrumental parts the band produces delicate and beautiful music. It's basically Mande, but you can hear that N'Faly has been playing in Europe for some time, this could perhaps be called extended Mande. It works anyway. The best track is the traditional song "N'diyanomo", full of depth and beauty, where bass, drums and kora float together into a higer musical unity. Also on the instrumental and self penned "Experience" N'Faly lets loose with mesmeriring kora - yes, grooves. On "Korokan" the band presents a kind of fusion, the tune is clearly jazz influenced. In fact, "Kora Grooves" is a surprisingly funky album ...N'Faly Kouyate and his Dunyakan is a band to reckon with. The strength of the band, the organic interplay between kora, bass and drums is splendid, and at their best N'Faly and his musicians present engaging and inventive kora grooves.

TOrr (World Music Central):

Guinea's N’Faly Kouyate presently gets around as a member of Afro Celt Sound System, though his deft and dazzling kora playing has also been heard on works by the likes of Alan Stivell and Robert Plant. Releases under his own name are the exception rather than the rule, and he makes this one count. Kora Grooves from West Africa...is likewise splendidly tight and traditional-leaning. Some funkier, jumpier tracks stand strong alongside slower, shimmering songs. High points include "N'diyanomo," which goes from Saharan to Iberian on a dime and "N'toman," bursting out like an African hoedown when a violin arrives on the scene. Actually, the entire disc is smashing, a potent piece of work from a master clearly at the top of his game.

Slipcue

"It's more inventive and outgoing than many traditionally-oriented kora albums, but not so far out there the groove gets lost, and not so groovalicious that the music's acoustic base gets buried under some bland electronica-crossover soundscape... Instead, it's a lively set with a nice mix of vocals and instrumental work... worth checking out!"

Allmusic.com:

"From the Afro Celt Sound System comes N'Faly Kouyate performing with his own smaller, slightly more traditional group Dunyakan. The music is based in traditional Guinean griot forms, but there are infusions of jazz, blues, and other ethnic musics...Kouyate is holding decently well to tradition. The accents away from the traditional kora repertoire come almost entirely from the rest of the band (though Kouyate does take an amazing solo on the balofon in Wawa that would make Keletigui Diabate jealous), with guitars and drum kits taking the focus of the rhythm for long stretches. The performances here are top-notch..that leads it to be just right."

(DF) @@@@@

Review of N’Faly Kouyate and Dunyakan (Festival Nuits D’Afrique concert, July, 2004):
